about

The student architect inhabits a space designed to constantly interrogate the state and conditions of the discipline. Existing between the openness of inquiry and the material realities of practice, we find ourselves in environment of testing, adaption, and iteration, where failure is reframed as an integral part of the creative process. Thus, the student architect builds in a sandbox.

Founded as a transdisciplinary initiative to provoke, enrich, and diversify critical discourse at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Sandbox provides a platform for the vertical mingling of contemporary architectural thought, spanning both disciplines and the hierarchies within. It aims to dismantle the notion that the developing architectural voice is unworthy of broadcast. Through live debates↗, open forum discussions↗, platformed community work↗, interactive installations↗ and publications↗, we aim to prompt emerging voices to argue and articulate fresh perspectives alongside the more cultivated voices of later-stage practitioners, artists, and thinkers.

Structured in thematic cycles spanning a calendar year, Sandbox operates in two phases. The spring Research Phase rigorously examines diverse areas of research (architecture, philosophy, geography, ecology, etc.) pertinent to a selected critical contemporary issue of the built environment through a series of reading cycles punctuated by live, oxford style debates. The fall sees the transition to a Publication Phase, wherein the previous semester's research becomes a driver of critical communal discourse, disseminated through a condensed call for submissions↗ and community forum events. This phase culminates in a printed publication called Drafts↗, compiling internal and community explorations in a curated artifact.

Sandbox exists as a theater of exchange, critically addressing contemporary issues surrounding the built environment through the exchange between the beautifully diverse scope of its inhabitants.

audience

Sandbox calls upon all thoughtful inhabitants of the built environment as both recipients and contributors in an open and equal discourse. Submissions from outside the Georgia Tech School of Architecture, and field of architecture as a whole, are welcomed and encouraged, further broadening the scope of discussions.

At the same time, Sandbox emphasizes the role of the student and emerging voice as both key contributors and consumers, and the role they can play in diversifying traditional architectural/design discourse.
